Blade Runner 2049 Redux

For this project, I was given the task to take a recognizable film poster and simplify it to its most fundamental aspects. I took key plot elements from the 2017 film Blade Runner 2049 (a sequel to the iconic 1982 film) and applied them to a stripped down poster which still communicates the themes and ideas relevant to the story. I also created a complementary title sequence which follows a similar design philosophy.

Blade Runner 2049 Title Sequence

This title sequence came about in tandem with the development of the poster. The footage of the sun comes from a friend which he filmed several years ago. The song used in the title sequence, Summer Wind by Frank Sinatra, appears early on in the film during a pivotal yet understated scene featuring the protagonist. I implemented a bold sans serif text displaying the names of the prominent actors and title card, which were inspired by the title card of Matt Reeves’ The Batman film.

The Poster

One of the strongest themes explored in the film is that of memory. Memory plays a key role in the plot and of the protagonists own arc. There are flashback scenes where the protagonists sees visions of his past and begins to question whether or not they are his own.

The focal point is the wooden horse, a catalyst in propelling the protagonists narrative forward. The fire and polaroid photo symbolize a fragility and uncertainty to one’s mind and emotions.
